Six schools through to the finals of the West Dominica Spelling Bee Competition

The West Dominica Children’s Federation (an affiliate of ChildFund Caribbean) will hold the Finals of its Primary Schools Spelling Bee Competition on Thursday 30th, June from 2:00 pm at the Public Service Union Building on Valley Road.

 

The competition was opened to students of Grade 5 students around the island.

 

The objectives of the Spelling Bee are:

 

ü To expand students vocabulary and encourage accurate word usage and pronunciation

 

ü To encourage students to explore and study the English language and its roots

 

ü To help students to learn to spell quickly, accurately and with comprehension

 

ü To promote students knowledge of proper word usage; encourage students to strive for excellence in spelling skills and other educational pursuits

 

ü To provide an opportunity for students to meet and compete with their peers in an atmosphere of fun and friendship.

Six (6) schools are through to the Semi Finals – St. Mary’s Primary, Roseau Primary, Soufriere Primary, Massacre Primary, Roosevelt Douglas Primary and St. John’s Primary.

 

The top speller in the semi-finals was Milan Philbert of the St. Mary’s Primary followed closely by Kyarra Shillingford of the St. John’s Primary School.

 

The organizersbelieve that children who participate in programs and activities are more likely to succeed as adults.

 

The West Dominica Children’s Federation do hope to give our children this advantage in life.
