SMA Steel Band and Genesis Steel Orchestra capture the 2011 Pan Savanne Awards

Chief Cultural Officer, Mr Raymond Lawrence has said that the cultural division is encouraged by the increase number of young persons involved in playing steel band music, as well as the formation of new steel band groups on the island.


Lawrence made these remarks while addressing the 2011 Pan Savanne competition held at the Carnival City last evening.


Six steel band groups participated in the competition which consisted of two categories, the junior and senior competition in which the competitors were required to play two songs each.


In the junior segment, the SMA Steel band emerged as the winner followed by the Mahaut Steel Band in second place and the st mark new vision steel pan in third place.


The Genesis Steel Band captured the award in the senior competition, followed by NBD Possie Culture Pan in second place and Brizee’s Pan Symphony in third place.


There were guest performances by the Pioneer Prep Cultural Drama Club as well as the 2011 Junior Monarch, the 2011 Calypso Queen and calypsonian Joey ‘Explosion’ Lloyd.


The event was organized by the Dominica Festivals Committee in collaboration with the Dominica National Pan Association and the Division of Culture.
