St Vincent Banana Industry Not Impacted by New EU Agreement
Officials from the Ministry of Agriculture Officials in St Vincent and the Grenadines are saying that the official signing of an agreement between the European Union and ten Latin American countries formally to end eight separate World Trade Organization (WTO) cases, would not have any impact on the country’s banana industry.
Latin American banana exporters had long protested against EU tariffs designed to protect small growers in former European colonies in Africa and the Caribbean.
Chief Agricultural Officer, Reuben Robertson, said the measures, which were officially signed into effect on Monday, had already started taking effect.
Robertson said the black sigatoka banana leaf spot disease, which St Vincent and the Grenadines currently has under control, continues significantly to affect many of the bigger countries in the global banana industry.
