The Agricultural Sector is one of two sectors which recorded a growth percentage in 2009
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Mr. Samuel Carrette said that the Agricultural Sector has grown by 5.2 percent in 2009, despite the decline in the Banana Sub Sector. According to Carrette, this signals a structural change in the industry where the Non Banana Sub Sector compensated for the decline in the Banana Sub Sector. Carrette made this disclosure while addressing the Dominica Banana and Producers Limited (DBPL) Annual General Meeting on Tuesday August 31st, at the Marigot Inland and Distribution Centre.
“We need to remind persons that investment in Agriculture has the greatest spread, since the poverty Assessment of 2002 showed that Agriculture had five (5) times returns in investment than many of the other sectors.”
Carrette who believes that Dominicans should focus on this information, urged the relevant individuals to continue to maintain hope in the sector that is now going through a very difficult process of restructuring.
