The DABA seeks funds to facilitate the National Basketball Teams’ participation in an upcoming regional tournament
Public Relations Officer of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA) Mr. Mickey Joseph is appealing to co-operate citizens to provide the much needed financial assistance, in order to facilitate the national teams’ participation in an upcoming regional tournament. Mr. Joseph said that while the players are enthusiastic about the tournament, they will only be able to participate if the necessary funding is obtained.
While the association has received assistance from the President of Dominica His Excellency Nicholas J.O Liverpool, the basketball PRO said that they are still awaiting word from the Government who had initially pledged to provide some form of assistance. The association has also written to the Dominica Olympic Committee as well as various business organizations, in an effort to obtain funds, since the monies which they have acquired through registration fees and from sponsors of the 2010 DABA Lime Dominica National Basketball League is being used to sustain the current league.
Despite the challenges, Mr. Joseph said that association is very optimistic, that they will receive the much needed financial assistance. The DABA has selected a team of 14 players after three weeks of intense training and a few trial matches. The team comprises of players from the communities of Paix-Bouche, Wesley, Marigot, Grand Bay and La Plaine all of whom are making sacrifices to attend practices regularly, from 7pm – 9pm in the evenings. According to Mr. Joseph, the players are in fact showing a lot of commitment, as they seek to develop the sport on the island. If they do receive the opportunity to participate in the tournament, this will be their first time in the past ten years.
