The Dominica Government Band launches scheduled events.

The Dominica Government Band launched its 2010/2011 grand program of events on Wednesday August 4th, 2010 at the Fort Young Hotel, in celebration of its’ Diamond Jubilee. This line up of scheduled events themed ‘Serving the nation with distinction,” will lead up to the band’s sixtieth anniversary slated for the month of June 2011. Band Master, Mrs Valena Letang said that there is absolutely no doubt that the band has and will continue to serve the nation with excellence.

 

“This will directly have an effect on individual members by making them feel good about themselves. The band members must be committed, take their practice sessions seriously and try to be at every engagement. This I know can be hard on certain individuals because of other commitments,” said Mrs Letang.

 

Chairman of the band committee, Mr. Hobbes V. Jno Baptiste said that the band’s purpose continues to be a Godly one as it continues to enrich society through the contribution of the musical warmth and comfort.

 

“The band has provided comfort for us at funerals and has included dances on parades in an orderly and military fashion. They have accomplish this through some of Dominica’s most noticeable song writers and singers with some being contemporary and traditional,” said Mr Jno Baptiste.

 

“The Dominica Government Band is dear to us,” said the Minister of National Security, Honourable Charles Savarin as he addressed the audience on this special occasion. He applauded the band on reaching thus far in their mission of “Serving the nation with distinction” and said that the Government of Dominica through the Ministry of National Security is willing to collaborate with the band committee in advancing its cause.

 

“I want to assure you that the Government of Dominica is willing to join with you in developing the band for the future including the authorized number of the band men, the structure of the band, the professional training of the band members, the question of a band house for the band, the allowance for members of the band and the question of the band posing as a full time or part time band,” said Savarin.

 

The  events leading up to the band’s 60th anniversary celebrations include a radio and television music program and school visits for the month of August through November, Christmas activities from November 28th to December 21st , as well as the formation of a Jouvert Band and launching of a CD and magazine,  just to name a few. The Dominica Government Band has been serving the nation since its inception in 1951.
