The Ministry of Health to merge the Drug Prevention Unit and the Psychiatric Unit

Dominica’s Chief Consultancy Psychiatrist, Dr Griffin Benjamin is supporting a recent decision by the Ministry of Health to merge the resources of the Drug Prevention Unit and the Psychiatric unit, in an effort to reduce the number of acute patients at the mental health facility.

According to Dr Benjamin, data continues to reveal that drug abuse accounts for more than eighty percent of the acute patients who are admitted to the ward and he believes that collaboration between the two units will contribute significantly to a reduction in the current trend.

Dr Benjamin also highlighted the need for more trained nurses as he believes that this will assist the department in delivering better services to its patients.

Dr Benjamin also announced that very soon another Dominican consultant psychiatrist will be joining the health team at the psychiatric unit.
