Home owners are being urged to be mindful of where they build, and try their best not to construct homes in very close proximity to each other.

This advice came from Public Relations Officer of the Fire Department, Wayne Letang following a fire on Hillsborough Street in Roseau on Saturday May 3rd 2014 at 4:19 pm.

He stated, seven houses were involved in the blaze out of which three were completely destroyed and the other four were either affected with burnt furniture and or walls, and at least three families were left homeless as a result of the fire.

He said based on their investigation, the fire started at the home of Viola Canbran which was completely destroyed. This house was occupied by Dorothy David.

A house occupied by Janice Scotland was also completely destroyed, in addition to a house occupied by Marshall Joseph and Kenroy Antoine.

Other houses affected included that of; Cecil Joseph Junior, Oliver Williams and Maria Alexander.

Letang is urging the public to ensure they practice fire safety measures at all times which involves the careful use of open flames in their homes, especially in areas where homes are in close proximity to each other, and in the event of a fire the blazes spreads quickly.

The Fire Department’s investigations into the fire are ongoing, while the Police have also launched their own investigation.

The cost of the fire and the cause is ongoing.

The cost of the damage as a result of the fire is currently being assessed.

Mr. Letang did not confirm or deny reports that suggest it may have been a case of arson however; he noted that one person is assisting police with their investigation.

The homes that were destroyed were wooden, while the damaged house were a concrete and also wooden.

Letang added that extracting persons for medical purposes is also affected when homes are built so closely.

A special thank you was extended to the residents of Hillsborough Street, and all those who assisted the fire officers in bringing the blaze under control.
