Today in History: Inventor of First Clock in American Born
On this day in 1731, Benjamin Banneker, inventor of the first clock in America, is born in Ellicot City.
Benjamin Banneker was a free African American scientist, inspector, calendar author and farmer.
Banneker’s knowledge of astronomy also helped him author a commercially successful series of directories.
He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson, drafter of the United States Declaration of Independence, on the topics of slavery and racial equality.
