Today in History: Jane Matilda Bolin Appointed Judge of Court

Jane Matilda Bolin

On this day July 22, 1939, Jane Matilda Bolin appointed Judge of Court of Domestic Relations in New York City, by Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia, became the first Black woman judge.

She was the first African-American woman to graduate from Yale Law School, the first to join the New York City Bar Association, and the first to join the New York City Law Department.
