Today in History: Progressive Party Convention Meets
On this day July 23, 1948 the Progressive Party convention met in Philadelphia, where Henry Wallace was nominated for President.
New Party made major effort to attract Blacks; approximately 150 Black delegates and alternates attended the convention.
Thirty-seven Black ran for state and local offices on the party ticket, ten Blacks ran for Congress.
The party attracted few Black voters but forced the Democratic Party to make serious gestures to hold the Black vote.
