On this day 1940, Soul singer William “Smokey” Robinson was born in Detroit, Michigan.

Robinson’s first singing group was the Miracles which he formed in 1955 while still in high school.

The group’s first success came in 1960 with the hit, “Shop Around.” William “Smokey” Robinson is an American R&B singer-songwriter, record producer, and former record executive.

Robinson led the group from its 1955 origins as The Five Chimes until 1972 when he announced a retirement from the stage to focus on his role as Motown’s vice president.
