Tourism Refresher Course Certificate Presentation
A number of locals, who participated in a Tourism Refresher Course organized by the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA), and the Dominica State College (DSC), received their certificates on Tuesday February 26th 2013 during a special ceremony.
Director of Tourism, Mr. Colin Piper says this course was very important as we all know how fragile the Tourism sector is and since we are selling an experience, we need to be on top of our game.
The decrease in cruise ship calls to Dominica, remind us just how fragile this industry is he said, It shows the importance for all involved in tourism to be refreshed in the key components of the tourism product, and the delivery of good quality service.
The course targeted craft and souvenir vendors and tour guides, where 40 participants were trained in each category.
As a niche market Mr. Piper said we cannot compete on economies of scale, therefore our comparative advantage needs to be quality, which is why it is very important to continue such training to deliver quality service consistently.
Mr. Merril Matthew of the DSC reminded the participants on how important they are to the development of tourism in Dominica, as they are the ones who the visitors’ first encounter and the first impression is always a lasting one.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Tourism and Legal Affairs, Mrs. Claudia Bellot noted, the success of each participant’s business depends on whether or not they are able to please their clients, while meeting and surpassing their expectations.
For the tour guides she said, their trade relies heavily on the quality of information they possess and their ability to relay such information to their customers, in a very confident and gracious manner.
She urged the participants to be very careful so that what we do is satisfactory and not get complacent.
We always have to ensure the client or customer is fully satisfied after they passed through our business.
All the participants were presented with certificates by Mr. Colin Piper; including Regina Attidore, Shirley James, Catherine Joseph, Cordelia James, Kishma Benjamin and Martin Lander.
