Universal Children’s Day Rally
November 20th was observed as Universal Children’s Day and in Dominica the Social Welfare Division along with the Wesley Village Council, put together a rally in Wesley, to mark the occasion.
Students from the North including Portsmouth, Dos Dane, Calibishie, Woodfordhill, Marigot and Wesley gathered at the Wesley Village Council to march in recognition of children worldwide, in the fight against Child Abuse.
Ms. Jemma Azille, Acting Coordinator of the Child Abuse Prevention Unit, says that we have the power to stop child abuse in Dominica. She says this violence has no boundaries and affects everyone.
It can also take the form of physical abuse.
Ms. Azille stated that the problem cannot be addressed alone and it requires the partnership of all those involved including the community, schools, churches, even the private sector.
Honourable Gloria Shillingford, Parliamentary Representative for the Wesley Constituency and Minister for Social Services, Gender Affairs and Community Development, says that children are the leaders of tomorrow and we need to show support and respect their rights.
She is calling on all sectors in society to make it their responsibility to report any person who violates the rights of children.
As part of the activities a parenting program was completed in Wesley.
Topics covered included Early Childhood Development and Communication in the Family. Parents received certificates for their completion of the program.
Mrs. Shillingford and Ms. Azille hopes that the parents take the information they have received and help others to stop the abuse of children.
