Veteran Calypsonian “Man Himself” Laid To Rest
The St. Gerard’s Chapel in Roseau was filled with family and friends, on Saturday March 22nd 2014, when veteran calypsonian, Mr. Clifford Albert “Man Himself” Mendes was laid to rest.
Mr. Mendes passed away during the early hours on Tuesday March 11th 2014, after complaining of feeling unwell, on Monday March 10th 2014.
This well-known writer and Calypsonian’s death sent shockwaves through the calypso fraternity and left everyone whose life he touched in a state of shock.
During the funeral service, Bishop of Roseau, His Lordship Gabriel Malzaire, who was a friend of Mr. Mendes, reminisced on their time spent together while they were both studying to enter the priesthood.
Bishop Malzaire noted the huge crowds present at the service shows that, Mr. Mendes’ life impacted on the lives of many.
In 1982 he went on to become a teacher and most recently taught at the St. Martin Secondary School.
Born on July 16th 1955, he left behind two children, Berty and Aretha Mendes, who reside at Newtown.
May his soul rest in peace and God protect his family.
