Volunteers Appreciated for their Dedication
In an effort to foster growth, social development and education among youth on the island, the Youth Development Division has embarked upon various activities over the years.
Youth from various districts, assembled at the Pierre Charles Secondary School on August 23rd, to show appreciation to the volunteers, who contributed to a successful 2013 summer programme.
The programme was initiated by the Youth Development Division in collaboration with the United Nations Development Project (UNDP) and Dowasco, under the theme “running with water”.
Ms. Kerry Ann, Coordinator of the Roseau Youth Center said the summer volunteerism program had two aspects which were the work study programme with young persons doing community projects in their various communities and the summer day camp where twelve communities had an informal classroom setting where the teenagers interacted with the primary school students.
The program, which has been in existence for a number of years, mainly focuses on working with students at the high school level, to help them enhance their developmental skills.
Ms. Remie noted this year the programme decided to focus on water, disaster risk management, water conservation, water management, protection of the rivers and cleaning of the water ways and beaches.
The students, who participated in the summer programme, said they gained a lot of knowledge that will be beneficial to them in the future.
