Windward Islands face England Lions at Windsor Park Sports Stadium

Cricket fans in Dominica are in for a treat this week as Dominica’s 2011 cricket calendar goes regional.  From March 17-20, Windward Islands will face England Lions at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium (WPSS).

The England Lions (formerly England A) is a cricket team representing England and Wales and is the “second-tier” of international English cricket, just below the full England cricket team.  The team was formed as a way of giving promising young cricketers the experience of playing international cricket.

This match is part of ROUND 6 of the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Regional 4-Day Tournament that began in February.  Other teams in the tournament include Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana, Leeward Islands, Barbados and Combined Campuses and Colleges.

The Windward Islands team drew with Jamaica in Round 2, beat Guyana in Round 3 and have a first innings lead over Barbados at the end of the third day of Round 5 currently taking place in Barbados, thanks to the brilliant batting of Andre Fletcher and Liam Sebastien (Captain) with scores of 116 and 94, respectively.  On Saturday, the second day of the fifth round match, excellent off-spin bowling from Sebastien helped him to achieve his best first-class figures of 6-97 from 47 overs.

Marie-Antoinette Mora, DCA Media Liaison, said, “We wantto encourage everyone to come out to witness this momentous event.  This is a unique opportunity to witness future West Indies and England players and the Dominica Cricket Association (DCA) has made it possible for all schools to attend the match.

All children in school uniform, accompanied by teachers, will be admitted to the games free of charge on Thursday and Friday.  Furthermore, the school with the most students attending the games over the two-day period will win a Cricket Kit, compliments DIGICEL.  On Thursday and Friday, adults pay $15 while the entrance fee on Saturday and Sunday is $20 for adults and only $5 for children under 15 years.  Season tickets for the four-day match cost $60.”

This match signals the beginning of a series of regional and international cricket matches being held in Dominica this year.  From May 13-22, the Windward Islands Cricket Board Under 15 Tournament will get underway followed by the Windward islands Cricket Board Win Lotto 20/20 Tournament from May 25-30, all leading up to the historic 3rd Digicel Test Match – West Indies Vs India – from July 6-10.
